5 Reasons why driving on worn-out tyres is dangerous

Why are treads important?

The treads of the tyre are grooved structures. These grooves help in expelling all the unwanted materials that may enter your tyres and hinder their performance. The treads provide traction or grip in various road conditions such as dry, wet and snowy. Because of the treads, the car runs smoothly on the road and if they become worn-out, they may do precisely the opposite they are supposed to do; these tread conditions might end your car up in blowouts and accidents instead of keeping them on the track safely. The treads on the wet roads are responsible for expelling all the water that makes way towards the tyres with their grooves and they force the water away from the tyre. There are many dangerous consequences of driving with bald tyres.

Hydroplaning

Hydroplaning is a condition where the tyres lose all the grip they have on the roads due to the streets’ wet conditions. This usually happens because the tread grooves become too shallow to channel out all the water that enters inside during the rainy season. As a result of this, your tyres may skid a lot because they no longer respond to the steering wheel inputs. You try to steer the wheel to bring it under control, but nothing actually happens. Always remember, the shallower the grooves are, the risk of hydroplaning increases more. This could result in accidents and hefty insurance costs which anyone would want to avoid.

Poor handling on snowy surfaces

As mentioned above, the sipes which are cut at the edges are responsible for getting proper traction over the snowy surfaces. If the sipes are not in good condition, this may lead to spinning out of your tyres. If you do not have enough sipes, take them to a repair shop to add extra edges.

The heat build up

There is a lot of heat that is generated because your tyres are always in direct contact with the roads. This continuous contact creates friction which in turn builds up heat. The grooves’ function is to allow air to pass through so that too much heat does not lead to blowouts. Bald tyres do not have many grooves that will enable the air to pass, eventually cooling down. 

No blowout resistance

Treads have a better chance at preventing the blowouts than the bald tyres if you accidentally run over a sharp object.

Less air pressure

Bald tyres result in the loss of air pressure. Under-inflated tyres are hazardous to drive as they cannot grip the road properly even in dry conditions.
