Pirelli was established in the year 1872, by Giovanni Battista Pirelli in Milan. In 1873, he laid the foundation of the very first plant to produce rubber items. This was followed by the production of rubber bands for carriage in 1885 and creation of the first velocipede tyre in 1894.

In the first few years of the 1900s, there was an expansion of Pirelli Tyres Gosport geographically by the launch of plants in Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Southampton, Burton on Trent and Manresa. The commitment to racing strengthened during this time, as the inaugural Grand Prix conducted by the Automobile Club of France was triumphed by a vehicle running on Pirelli tyres.

Following the war, the first innovative sports tyre -Superflex Stella Bianca- was launched. These tyres were given a tread to prevent any damage at a high speed. In 1949, the brand launched its first radial tyre named Cinturato, offering better safety, wear and performance. Further expansion took place in the 1960s, with the launch of plants in Greece, Turkey and Brazil. In the 1980s, the first motorcycle radial tyre was launched along with more Brazilian plants. This gave the company a competitive position in the segment. In the early 1990s, the group was involved in a corporate-financial program, post the market recession, and unsuccessful acquisition of Continental AG.

In 2001, they started the production of the Modular Integrated Robotised System, a technology which changed the tyres Gosport building process. Another technology-Continuous Compound Mixing- was introduced to check innovative materials. In 2010, Pirelli transformed into a pure tyre company. The same year saw the Pirelli Foundation being laid to enhance and safeguard its historical heritage along with promoting the culture of entrepreneurship as an important part of the cultural heritage of Italy.

In June 2010, Pirelli re-entered Formula 1™ and went on to become the exclusive tyre supplier thereafter. They have been the sole tyre suppliers for the Superbike World Championship as well as some other single-brand championships like the Ferrari Challenge and the Lamborghini Super Trofeo. Between the year 2015 and 2017, Pirelli started focussing on accomplishing all the objectives put forth in the agreement of partnership. Marco Polo thus became the sole shareholder of Pirelli and the reference shareholder of Prometeon Tyre Group (Pirelli Industrial).
