Part worn tyres, as the name suggests, are those tyres which are partially worn out and don’t seem to be in the condition as a brand new tyre. A recent national level investigation about the sales of the worn out tyres across different parts of UK was carried out which brought out shocking results. According to this survey, a huge no of drivers is using the second-hand tyres which fail to stand upon the set safety standards and thus are exposed to scary danger levels.
This study was carried out by Tyre Safe and the National Tyre Distributors Association in association with other councils, and it revealed some horrific results. It showed that around 37% of the part worn tyres that are bought by anonymous shoppers pan country are damaged and shouldn’t have been put for sale in the first place. The authority said that the major factor for keeping in track on-road safety is the condition of the tyre which should not be compromised with and the shops selling tyres should not, in any case, sell worn-out or ill-conditioned tyres. All the second-hand tyres that are sold to customers should strictly meet the standards defined by the law.
The various faults that were uncovered in this study are damaged beads, puncture repair, penetration damage, under-inflated tyre tube, water being left inside the tyre, improper size of the tyre etc. The campaign issued formal guidance to about 20 worn out parts dealer across the country. One of the major motives of this campaign was to generate awareness and sensitivity about the danger involved in using the worn out parts. A lot of people, despite knowing the risks that come with buying worn tyres, still opt for them believing that they are safe and offer a fair value for money.
Some opportunist businessmen have tried to take benefit of the fact that worn tyres are relatively cheaper and offered such tyres to the motorists who are on a tight budget. This investigation also shed light upon the fact that the tyre retailers selling such tyres either don’t pay attention to the safety of the motorist or do not have the required knowledge to examine the risks and faults. Many retailers had to pay a handsome amount of money as fine when found out selling such faulty tyres and were warned to be facing stricter punishment like imprisonment in future if they continue to do so. Many retailers even mixed tyres of different categories like winter tyres and all-season tyres and sold them in each other’s name.
Stuart Jackson, Chairman Tyre safe says “Previous investigations into the sale of illegal part worn tyres have focused on locations where there was a strong suspicion of improper behaviour, but these latest results show beyond doubt that this a national epidemic that needs tackling at the highest levels. We look forward to working closely with even more local councils, Government officials and Trading Standards Offices across the whole of the UK to eradicate this problem and help make our roads a safer place.”
The authorities also highlighted the importance of buying a new tyre instead of second hand one to ensure safety and a good value-for-money.
